So, this didn’t start out as a trip to Camden. My husband was in search of an antique desk for his home office (formerly the oldest son’s game room) and we found a really gorgeous desk on Facebook Marketplace….in Bishopville, SC.
We arranged to drive down and pick it up on a Saturday. Long drive through lots of open land. But it turned out to be a nice find. Here it is:
Still needs some love and attention to the inlaid leather top, but what a really great looking desk.
As we start to leave, we do a search for lunch options and find a review for a BBQ joint near Camden. I offer up that there are supposed to be great antique stores in Camden and wouldn’t mind checking those out a few while in the area.
We set the navigation and head on to The Twisted Pig in Lugoff, SC.
Hubby got the buffet (BBQ Has was on the menu!) and I got the sandwich:
They offer several sauce options so I went with the mustard sauce. I was hoping it was close in flavor to my Uncle Marvin’s mustard sauce but it was closer to the sweet mustard sauce best known in that area. Still, it was great BBQ and worth the drive.

Heading back into Camden, we hit The Menagerie. We walk around and I finally see a booth with a good amount of cookbooks at the very, very back. They’re a little pricey so I decide to look for quality and not quantity.
After going through two shelves, I land on these two:
Buffet Benny’s Family Cookbook (Patty Parsons Severt) and Santee Supper (Linda Anderson and Norvelle Walker with sketches by Anne Daugherty Sconyers).
I chose these two because they both happed to be autographed! Benny turns out to be Benny Parsons….
And as I’m checking out, the booth owner was having a 50% off sale!
We browse a fancy-shmancy store and then find another store with a lot of individual booths. And even though I didn’t find any cookbooks in this store, I do find this gem, once again, at the very back of the store:
Just in time for the fall season!
By now, we’re exhausted. I’m ready to get back on the road to head home…and we’ve only been through three antique stores. There’s so many more but we don’t have it in us. Plus, it’s almost five and the stores will start closing soon anyways.
I’m thinking our next visit would need to start much earlier in the day. Here’s hoping we do another visit soon!
