It’s now been just over a year since the in-laws sold their condo in Hilton Head. I really miss the ability to have a quick getaway or vacation destination. But, as I told the hubby, we’ll get back there on our own terms someday.
Luckily, we were able to find an affordable condo rental on the island for a few days at the end of the year. I thought if we did a Tuesday to Friday, then we’d get a lower rate and avoid some of the New Year crowds that would inundate the area. And believe it or not, it worked out really well.
And thank goodness we were able to do a day in Savannah! I’m not going to shy away from telling you that I missed trips to my favorite used bookstore, The Book Lady, the most. It’s crossed my mind several times about the great cookbooks that have come in and been sold during the time that I haven’t been able to visit.
The trip over to Savannah included hubby and the two sons, so I knew that my side trip to Book Lady would immediately bore them. My plan was to do a quick scan and grab while checking out as quickly as possible. I would say from entering to leaving, it was about 20 minutes.
So, let’s see what I got:
Moon River Collection (Landings Landlovers Association, Savannah, GA), Moss, Marshes & Memorable Meals (Isle of Hope United Methodist Women, Savannah, GA), Rice: A Food for All Seasons (Compiled by Harold Deane Thomason Akins & autographed!), Royal Recipes from the Cajun Country (John and Glenna Uhler) and Piggin’ Out: A Southern States Guide to Bar-B-Que Eateries (Dr. Keith Johnson).
The two community cookbooks were no-brainers and the Cajun cookbook was published by Claitor’s which is the same company that printed the Mercedes Vidrine cookbooks. When I see this company as the publisher, I associate it with local knowledge.
Now for the big, big find:
The Dooky Chase Cookbook (Leah Chase). I could not pass this one up!
So, as you can see, I didn’t come away with a huge haul, but I think these are really great selections.
Can’t wait for another trip! Maybe I need to consider a day trip just for me?
