Are the dog days of summer here? The list of sales for today was very, very thin. Plus, there was a torrential downpour last night—I wonder if any of the sales will actually happen. My first two sales didn’t even bother to open so maybe everyone is calling it a day and staying in bed.
At stop #3, I finally see people slowly getting set up. Looks like a combination of “cleaning out Grandma’s house” and two friends setting up their own tables. The “Grandma” part of that equation has possibilities for a cookbookaholic. I ask the lady about cookbooks and she brings out a box—filled with books on gardening, laying stone paths and Latin names for plants. Okay. Digging a little deeper, I find these:
Cocktail Essentials, The Best of Martha Stewart Living: Good Things, Cooking Class: Chinese Cookbook and The Magic of the Truffle. I ask if there were any old church cookbooks with the plastic spiral spine. She said, “only one, but it was my Grandmother’s so I want to hold on to it.” Completely understandable. Oh well.
Interestingly enough, there’s an estate sale up next. It’s supposed to be very small as the lady is still living but downsizing for an upcoming move. I didn’t realize how small the sale was—it was all contained in about three rooms. No cookbooks at all, but I did snag this really cool footed cake plate.
I thought the tag read $8 so I grabbed it very quickly. When I went to check out, I realized it read $18. That was a little more than I planned, but today’s sales were so bad that I decided to go ahead and get it. On the way to the car, I notice the scribble on the top of the tag actually reads "as is." Oh boy...
On my way to the last garage sale, I’m driving up a side street and I promise you I saw NFL mascot Sir Purr riding on a motorcycle. I thought he was chauffeured around in a tricked out, customized van, but whatever. I guess that’s how he gets to games now in this economic downturn…
At the last stop, the people are so behind schedule that I actually saw them step out into an empty yard and begin to set up their sale. I was content to just sit there and contemplate my breakfast destination but I spied another yard saler (with a good eye for items and a seemingly limitless budget) so I jumped out of the car and beat him up the stairs. I snag one cookbook and one really cool, shiny cut glass candy/nut dish.
Great Good Food by Julee Rossa is my last find of the day. It’s still super early so I think I’ll head home and beat the heat before it becomes super humid and oppressive.
