Seriously. In between my hunt for cookbooks, I've actually come across a lot of Halloween items at yard sales for the past few weeks. It's weird how everyone all at once seems to have some psychic connection and all of a sudden Halloween decorations are everywhere.
My friend, Mary Dana, does Halloween like you would not believe. She has so many decorations that she begins in September and has the front yard and every room in the house decked out floor to ceiling. It's amazing! We've been lucky enough to be invited to her annual Halloween party for the past several years and it's always a lot of fun to see how she goes all out. (I've won the trivia contest at least twice!)
We've never really done much. We live on a street with very few children—in fact, we've always taken the boys to other neighborhoods to do trick-or-treating. The most we've done for outside decoration is a big plastic witches' cauldron, chalk body outlines and "Caution: Haunted Area" yellow tape across the front porch. On the inside, we had a small table where the boys would display their favorite Halloween items like a jack-o'-lantern puzzle and spider rings. That was great when they were small but now they're 9 and 10. Spider rings, really? That’s how we want to continue decorating?
This yard sale season has been a hoot catching some really good deals. Here's what I've been able to find so far:
Two ravens and an entire Halloween table display (in four parts!) complete with spooky sound effects: $9 (talked her down from $15)
Crate + Barrel Ghost tea light covers and a pack of 9 spider tea lights: $2 Nice but I wonder if Mary Dana would like these?
